How to Sew Bunting - Step by Step Fat Quarter Tutorial

Little Miss has requested some purple bunting for her bedroom.  Here's how I made it using a pack of fat quarters.

You can cut the triangles any size you like.  Mine are 8" high then I cut the sides so that each triangle had a base 8" wide.

I was able to pile up all five of my fat quarters and cut them all together with my rotary cutter and ruler.

I also cut the same number of triangles from some coordinating plain fabric for the backs.

Here are all the triangles cut out and ready to sew photoed with a daylight bulb.  I swear these are the same fabric, the colour difference is 100% down to different lighting.

Place each triangle and backing right sides together and sew along the long edges.

Clip the point and clip it again so it's nice and crisp.

Turn right sides out and press.

Next cut the binding.  You can use pre-made binding but I didn't have any in a suitable colour so I'm making my own.  It's 4" wide.

To join the lengths of binding place the ends perpendicular to each other and sew diagonally across as shown.

Press the seam open and trim the excess fabric.

Once you've got a continuous length of binding fold it in half length-ways and press.

Stitch the triangles to the binding right sides and raw edges together.

Butt each triangle up against it's neighbour.  If you needed to you could leave a gap but you'd need to measure each time to make sure that all the gaps were exactly the same.

After all the triangles are sewn in place fold the binding over to the right side of the triangles and hold it in place with clips.  You could use pins if you prefer but for binding I find clips hold the fabric more securely.

Use an edge stitch foot to sew along the very edge of the binding.   You could do this by hand which would certainly give a neater finish but I'm lazy.

And here's my finished bunting.

Here's the last time I made bunting, using ribbon for the binding and a significantly faster sewing method:
