Bodice

I'm not a fan of zips on the back of clothing. I can never make them look neat which is probably more due to my lack of skill more than anything else. But the zip puller always seems to sit right on the sensitive skin at the base of the neck and that would really irritate me. Despite having a good sized stash of zips I never seem to have the right length in a suitable colour.

Buttons now that's a whole different matter. I have about a gazillion different buttons, three generations worth of buttons hoarded and saved for "when they come in useful". Any excuse to use them up gets my vote.

So when I saw that the Wildflower Dress from Peek A Boo patterns has a button closure I snapped it up straightaway.

I've used light weight interfacing to reinforce the back opening.

I typically pin my seams before sewing them with my sewing machine.

The bototm edge of the bodice lining is easiest to press up before sewing the seams.

Sleeves

My little girl loves flutter sleeves so that's what I've cut out for this version of the Wildflower dress.

I start by giving them a good press.

They look so fiddly when they're gathered but they're so cute it's worth the trouble.

Pinning the flutter sleeves in place can also be a little fiddly.

Now it's time for the neckline. This is the bit where the dress really starts to take shape.

I clip the neckline so that it lies nice and flat.

Now for the magic! The flutter sleeves are trapped between the bodice and the bodice lining fabrics.

Again I clip the curves to make sure they lie nice and neatly.

When it's turned the right way out it's like magic, the flutter sleeves are perfectly positioned with all the raw edges hidden inside the lining.

The bodice and the bodice lining side seams are sewn separately except for where they meet at the under arm.

Skirt

The skirt construction is super simple, just a front and back seam.

There's sooo much gathering!!

I like to overlock the raw edges on my hems.

I used to eyeball my hems but they've got so much neater since I started taking the time to check the hem depth with a sewing gauge. It only takes a few minutes and it looks so much neater when the hem is finished.

I've gone for a single needle to stitch my hem. I often use a twin needle but on this dress a simple single line of stitching seemed more appropriate.

Finishing Touches

I also make use of my sewing gauge for marking out the button holes.

I like to leave the bodice lining until last. The turned under edge of the lining its hand sewn onto the gathered part of the skirt. The stitches are neatly hidden from the front of the skirt and barely visible from the inside of the bodice. It takes quite a bit of time but the perfect finish is worth the extra effort of hand sewing.
