WeeMonkey Boys Birthday Card

Here's my card for today, a super simple design for a little boy.

There's an annoying song I keep coming across about monkeys jumping on beds.  There's one particular line "mum called the doctor and the doctor said no more monkeys jumping on the bed".  The doctor's voice is exaggerated, implying the pointing finger that goes with it.

I can't get the darn thing out of my head!!!

What was wrong with nice, simple old fashioned nursery rhymes?

I like to decorate the inside too:

Burda 9412 Black Leggings Sewing Project

Super simple leggings made from one pattern piece.  The top folds over to form a really deep waistband, perfect for sitting above the nappy for a more comfortable fit.

Here's the pattern I used, Burda 9412.

These are cut from an old gent's T'Shirt.

Inside leg seams first,

I over-lock my seams for a professional finish.

One leg is turned right side out and put inside the other leg for stitching the crotch seam.

Hems next.

Then the waistband is folded and sewn in place with a twin needle.

They're a touch baggy as yet but I've learnt that's a good thing.

Burda 9408 Purple and Pink Girls TShirt

Here's my latest sewing project.

Made with Burda 9408 pattern.  Main fabric from Abakhan, contrast fabric from an old baby vest.

I've done a more in depth description with step by step pictures in another post.

I really need to get on with making more long sleeved shirts but I love the idea of using old baby clothes to make new ones.

I'm struggling to find enough fabric for long sleeves.  I prefer the button down the front style babygrows which means i generally cant get a sleeve out of the front.  The few "full front" babygrows I have feature big designs on the front so theyre no good.

I reckon if I'm super accurate with my cutting I might be able to get a pair of long sleeves out of a baby grow if I cut them from the sides and place the side seam on the centre sleeve.
I'll be trying that next time I cut a batch.

Towneley Hall Fun Fair and Play Ground

I spent most of the bank holiday weekend in bed with the flu - grrr!  I hate being ill when the weather is nice and I'd much rather be out working in the garden or doing something nice.

Thankfully I felt much better on the Sunday and we made a little trip to a Fun Fair being held at Towneley Hall.

We took a little picnic along.

The fair itself was pretty rubbish to be honest, Little Miss enjoyed watching some of the rides go round but she was too young for most of them of course.   I was expecting a few stalls and the like that we could have a potter round, but it was just a few fairground rides and nothing else.

So we went for a walk around the grounds and of course the playground area.

Little Miss was too young to be interested last time we visited so I'd completely forgotten that Towneley Hall's playground features an ingenious giant sand pit with play machinery and water spouts.

My little girl had an amazing time moving the sand around and playing in the water.  I love this type of toy because it gives so much scope for learning and imagination.  It also kept Little Miss occupied for a good hour - while I reminded myself that clothes are made to be washed.  Sods Law (which ALWAYS applies where my daughter is concerned) this was a brand new outfit.

Burda 9408 Sewing Project - Orange T Shirt with Shoulder Snaps

I love that this pattern can also be used for a plain and simple T Shirt with the option of short of long sleeves.

This is to go with a dress I'll be making later on so I'm making it without the optional applique.  This fabric doesn't have quite enough stretch to skip the shoulder snaps, so I'm making it up according to the pattern instructions.

The neckbands are folded in half right sides together.  Sewn at the ends, trimmed, turned and pressed.

Pinned onto the neck edge right sides and raw edges together.

I've run the inner and lower edges of the interfacing through the overlocker to neaten them before stitching them onto the shoulders.

All turned to the right side and well pressed.  (This view shows the wrong side, the interfacing is pressed to the wrong side of the T Shirt front.)

Underlaps next, pressed wrong sides together with the raw edges to the shoulder seam.

And the back neck band just the same as the front.

All neatly pressed - ish.

Before setting in the sleeves I've pinned the underlap and interfacing together.  The pattern advises applying the snaps instead at this point, but Little Miss was sound asleep in the next room so there was no way I was getting my hammer out!

Sleeves pinned in place ready for sewing.

I've overlocked the hems and sleeves then pressed them up before top stitching the hems in place last of all.

Finally the sleeve and side seams.

And here's the finished article.  A little on the baggy side as yet, but I'm sure there's a growth spurt on the horizon so it's a good thing.
