How to Shorten Jeans - Step by Step DIY

I finally did it. I actually got round to shortening a pair of jeans shortly after buying them!!  This is a lifetime first for me which is utterly disgraceful given I'm a short sewer (sewist?).  But I'm focusing on the positive fact that I did in fact achieve this tiny life goal.  And you know what it was E-A-S-Y!!

First I gathered my materials.

As well as my new jeans.

I tried them on a few times to figure out exactly where I wanted them to end.  Then I made sure that both legs were folded up by the same amount and gave them a good press to make the fold.

Just look at how much too long these jeans are for me!!  Seriously I know I'm short but I didn't think I was THAT short.  I do normally buy the short leg jeans but this standard pair were on offer, money's tight at the moment and I'm in dire need to new jeans.  There's only so much visible mending one pair can take before they look scray.

So I took the plunge and trimmed off the excess fabric - eekkk!!

I could have finished the edges with my overlocker but frankly I couldn't be bothered changing the thread for this tiny little project so I folded the raw edge in on itself.

Then I sewed a super simple hem.  I did look at fancy "keep the original hem" instructions but my jeans originally had a simple hem so it was much easier and quicker to just replace it - keep it simple!!

And here we are.  I'm thinking that it's not even noticeable that they're been altered at all.  Perhaps my stitch length is a little smaller then the original.

I recently repaired a friends T Shirt where the hem hadn't caught in the original cover stitching.  I returned it to him apologising that my repair was blindingly obvious because my stitching was so much neater that the original hem lol.

I'm so glad to be avoiding fast fashion, I'm a bit nervous of making my own jeans hence this bought pair but other than bras I think I'm approaching a fully handmade wardrobe.  I'll tackle bras later like in a few years maybe when both kids are in school so they won't hear me swearing!!

Pop this in your Pinterest if like me, you need motivation to do your own alterations.
