Sewing Your Own Clothes
Sewing your own clothes is a fun and relaxing (if addictive!!) hobby that will allow you to craft a wardrobe that's as unique as you are. Sewing Supplies You’ll Need
The fabric is from my stash.

Sash
The front part of the sash gets tacked onto the bodice right at the start of sewing.
The ties are just two long lengths of fabric.
With the ends cut off at an angle.
After sewing them together I've clipped the corners and turned them the right side out.
For a really neat finish I've top stitched around the edges of the sash ties.
The sash ties are then tacked the bodice at the sides. The rest of the dress can then be sewn as normal.
Bodice
I'm not a fan of zips on the back of clothing. I can never make them look neat which is probably more due to my lack of skill more than anything else. But the zip puller always seems to sit right on the sensitive skin at the base of the neck and that would really irritate me. Despite having a good sized stash of zips I never seem to have the right length in a suitable colour.
Buttons now that's a whole different matter. I have about a gazillion different buttons, three generations worth of buttons hoarded and saved for "when they come in useful". Any excuse to use them up gets my vote.
So when I saw that the Wildflower Dress from Peek A Boo patterns has a button closure I snapped it up straightaway.
I've used light weight interfacing to reinforce the back opening.
I typically pin my seams before sewing them with my sewing machine.
The bototm edge of the bodice lining is easiest to press up before sewing the seams.
I clip the neckline so that it lies nice and flat.
Sleeves
The bodice and bodice lining need to be tacked topgether at the arm hole, just to hold them in place while setting in the sleeve.
I've pressed a simple hem into the bottom edge of the sleeves.
Then I pin the side seams.
Before stitching the hem in place.
I prefer to machine gather the sleeve caps to get the gathers nice and even.
Then I can set in the sleeves in the usual way.
Skirt
The skirt construction is super simple, just a front and back seam.
There's sooo much gathering!!
I like to overlock the raw edges on my hems.
I used to eyeball my hems but they've got so much neater since I started taking the time to check the hem depth with a sewing gauge. It only takes a few minutes and it looks so much neater when the hem is finished.
I've gone for a single needle to stitch my hem. I often use a twin needle but on this dress a simple single line of stitching seemed more appropriate.
Finishing Touches
I also make use of my sewing gauge for marking out the button holes.
I like to leave the bodice lining until last. The turned under edge of the lining its hand sewn onto the gathered part of the skirt. The stitches are neatly hidden from the front of the skirt and barely visible from the inside of the bodice. It takes quite a bit of time but the perfect finish is worth the extra effort of hand sewing.
I do hope this sewing project inspires you to have a go at sewing your own projects. Follow me on your favourite social media channel to see more craft projects like this.
